Period help??? Females only???

I just started my period today and it's unusually heavy. I was supposed to gobswimming with my boy cousins today but now I can't, I hate tampons and have never used one ever so that's out of the questions. What can I do???? I still have to go to the pool with them but I cant go swimming. :-( what else can I do??
